I would like to talk about the Spring Lantern Festival, which is one of the most vibrant traditional celebrations in my home country. It takes place annually on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, usually falling around late February or early March depending on the calendar. Because it marks the official end of the broader New Year celebrations, people look forward to it every single year. During the festival, cities and towns are completely transformed by thousands of colorful paper lanterns hung along streets, parks, and houses. In the evening, families gather to walk through light displays and solve playful riddles written on decorative scrolls attached to the lanterns. Another central custom is eating sweet glutinous rice balls filled with sesame or red bean paste. The round shape of these treats symbolizes unity and completeness, so sharing them with loved ones is a cherished routine. Beyond the fun activities, this festival holds immense cultural importance for us. It serves as a meaningful bridge between generations, where older family members pass down legends and customs to younger children. It also creates a powerful sense of community, as neighbors gather in public spaces to celebrate together regardless of their background. Ultimately, the glowing lights represent warmth, hope, and driving away bad luck for the upcoming year, making it a truly unforgettable and essential part of our cultural heritage.
